Why we cap workshops at twelve people

We get this question in the first week of registration, every single year: could the workshops take twenty-five instead of twelve?

They could. They would also stop working.

A workshop is not a talk with exercises bolted on. It is a room where the instructor can reach every participant inside a ninety-minute block. At twelve, an instructor gets to each person roughly three times — enough to catch someone who is quietly stuck. At twenty-five, that number goes to about one, and "quietly stuck" becomes "left without saying anything."

So the cap stays. What we can do is run the popular ones twice, which is why three workshops appear on both days this year.
